Out to pasture
Welcome to Idealog Weekly, the free email newsletter for New Zealand commercial creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone rich with ideas.
In this week’s issue: out to pasture, human joke, chicks in space, little globetrotter, bouncing balls, turn yourself on, the soprano and the quote of the week.
Out to pasture
Black Sheep director Jonathan King has proved the germ of an idea that flicks your frontal lobe when you least expect it is worth planting somewhere. While it may take a while to germinate—even four years of fertilization and weeding, as the case may be—if the end result is as good as a crazed sheep tearing Oliver Driver’s ear off, it’s worth a bit of patience. But it hasn’t all been silicon and tomato sauce; those four years of development gave King time to make a viable business plan, because he believes being a director isn’t about being “nuts and a wanker”—well, it’s not only about that anyway. Read King’s inspiring story on our website.
Human joke
Speaking of the walking woolly, if you think sheep jokes are funny this will put a merino sock in it. Scientists have created the world’s first human/sheep chimera. It has the body of a sheep, half-human organs and looks exactly like Senator John Kerry.
Chicks in space
Here’s something to wipe Lisa Nowak and her soiled NASA nappy out of your mind. Corseted cosmonaut Varla Dayne and her very close friend Lucy Featherston explore the nether regions of the universe in this slick vintage bondage-style comic, by Waiheke space nut Russell Chambers.
Little globetrotter
Here at HB Media, the Queen Street factory that brings you Idealog, we’ve just brought home our baby sister. Inspire magazine was born to travel and promises to be quite a looker … and a good reader too. It’ll be on newsstands everywhere from next week.
Bouncing balls
This public service spot featuring balls the size of balloons is supposed to make us all more testicularly-aware. Just makes me want to find a pin.

Designed for the frequent traveller, the M14 boasts the latest advanced noise cancellation technology from Phitek Systems, blocking up to 92% of background noise. Turn yourself on
Switched On is an evening that will be lit up by bright sparks like Howard Frederick, Chritian Dahmen and our own Vincent Heeringa. The topic? “Entrepreneurial but not ambitious—is the Kiwi lifestyle entrepreneur dream leading us to a national crisis?”
The soprano
If our potential crisis discussed above puts you in the mood for a shriek, Dame Kiri is playing with the NZSO in Christchurch next Tuesday.
Check out these events and more at Idealog’s events guide, Agenda, online and in print. Anyone can add an event to Agenda—just fill out the form on our website.
Quote of the week
“A lot of people think being a director is a licence to be nuts and a wanker, but you only get one shot at it and the people who are investing in it want to get their money back”
—Black Sheep director Jonathan King in ‘Monster Baby’
