Green queen
Welcome to Idealog Weekly, the free email newsletter for New Zealand commercial creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone rich with ideas.
In this week’s issue: Green queen, speaking of what I was speaking of, recommended reading, hello yellow, your fair share, rich with ideas, black white and lit by moonlight and quote of the week.
Green queen
Karen Walker doesn’t do things as slowly as her name would suggest—having dressed the world’s leaders (Madonna and co), she’s now working on saving us from the great warming tray in the sky. Can the queen of consumerism reconcile her textile interests with her environmental ones? Tune in to find out.
Speaking of what I was speaking of…
From the people who brought you Idealog comes global warming. Well, the book on it anyway. Hot Topic is the first emission from the engine room here at AUT Media. You can buy your copy early August, but in the meantime check out the companion website where you’ll find some of the smartest commentary on global warming since it got hot.

If you harbour a secret love of chick lit, it’s time to come out of your pink fluffy closet. Goodbooks is an online bookstore that donates all the profits to Oxfam—making even a Mills and Boon purchase a profound and worldly act. Tim Finn, Murray Ball, Fane Flaws and Chris Knox have got together to promote the venture, and have left their good deeds here for your appraisal.
Hello yellow
If you’ve had all the doughnuts and Duff Beer you can handle, here’s another way to wile away the hours till The Simpsons Movie gets here. The official film site now has a make your own character feature, where you’ll find googly eyes and overbites for Springfield, plus more shades of yellow than a morning nappy.
Your fair share
Prospectuses don’t feature on many bedtime reading lists—but maybe that’s just coz not many of them contain a cross-dressing prostitute. Burger Fuel’s prospectus does, complete with a smug, smiling and soliciting Hugh Grant. “We want people to understand more about our product and our brand—which is innovative,” says executive director, Josef Roberts. “We want them to know that we don’t just sell burgers—we’re a marketing company.” Seems to us they’re going about it the right way—this is the most irreverent sales pitch we’ve seen since the last Tom Cruise TV interview.
Rich with ideas
If you want to get in touch with your inner Richard Branson, get your ticket to ART Venture ’08. Up to ten creative people will be chosen for a programme which promises to marry your left brain to your right, hopefully leaving you creative and rich. What a novel idea. Someoneone should start a magazine about that.
Black, white and lit by moonlight
The weekend’s here: let the drama begin. The Darkness I Fell For is a suitably striking title for an exhibition of heritage buildings all snapped in black and white by the light of the moon. Owwwwwww.
Art and nonsense
And after you’ve had your fill of weekend drama, it will be time to fill up on some mid-week nonsense. An exhibition of new works by Dylan Scott, Ralph Matthews, Seekayem and more, Nonsensikal is fittingly described as “where pop-comic meets Graff”. Right. At the Up There Arts gallery, 145 K-Road Auckland, from July 19 to August 10.

Quote of the week
“… We had a piss-up. A lot of the time that’s all people want from Fashion Week isn’t it?”
—Karen Walker in Still searching
