Meet the neighbours
Welcome to Idealog Weekly, the free email newsletter for New Zealand commercial creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone rich with ideas.
In this week’s issue: Meet the neighbours, the clear-headed CEO, Japan’s new black, pulsing with fun and excitement, stuff it, the world’s biggest flipbook, mentor me and the quote of the week.
Meet the neighbours
Two Wellingtonians have written a guide to the dreams, desires and dislikes of our fellow Kiwis, using well-known cities, towns and suburbs to identify our ‘tribes’, ranging from Balclutha to the North Shore. Gena Tuffery reckons she learned a lot reading 8 Tribes (but then she would say that—she’s a Grey Lynn gal). Check out Gena’s report on our fellow citizens and ourselves on the Idealog website.
The clear-headed CEO
This week’s AUT-Idealog Innovation Series was great fun. Featured speaker Rod Drury took questions from the floor and Hamish Carter arrived on stage for a quick cameo about his first ‘real’ job. A great story, lots of interesting people in attendance and a roomful of creative types swapping cards and ideas.
And the aftermatch was a blast, but happily Rod was able to perform the next day’s duties unhindered, courtesy of a great presentation from Steinlager’s Danny Phillips about the reasoning behind the launch of Steinlager Pure and the ‘hangover myth’. Rod’s report: success!
We’ll have some video from the event to share in a future Idealog Weekly.
Japan’s new black
The awesome Ping magazine reports that the Japanese have no confusion about the new black … it’s just the old black, now the colour of choice for everything from aircraft to toilet paper (six rolls for $20). Perhaps Eden Park management could get a rush order in time for the big match tomorrow.
Pulsing with fun and excitement
“Featuring incredible 3D graphics, see your email come to life from any angle! From poolside to beach, your email pulses with fun and excitement like never before. It’s an email metaverse!”
I’m quite happy that my email doesn’t come to life, but if you’ve ever wanted to imagine your inbox as a beach, 3D mailbox has just the product for you. (Despite widespread disbelief, it’s a real product.)
Stuff it
“We’re moving from a world of stuff, from the idea that there’s a finite amount of gold out there, a finite amount of almost anything out there. Throughout all of history, people fought over stuff: land, fuel, stuff. But in your generation, the most value that will be created isn’t stuff anymore. It really is ideas. The Internet is an abstraction, and the value of Google exceeds the value of all the carmakers. In a world that’s about ideas, it’s not a zero-sum game. You don’t have to win by someone else losing, where you have the gold or oil or water, and somebody else doesn’t.
“In a world of ideas, you all create and share those ideas and everybody has more ideas in the end, whether it’s a cure for cancer, or a way to make water drinkable, or a way to make energy that’s non-polluting. And whether you like it or not, you are moving for the first time into a world where ideas matter more than all the stuff there is.”
Right on, Dean Kamen.
The world’s biggest flipbook
This ad plays in New York subway tunnels, turning public transport into the world’s biggest flipbook.

Mentor me
Creative Aucklanders in need of some assistance have two weeks to get their applications in for next year’s Art Venture programme. Up to ten successful candidates will each receive a tailored ‘personal approach’ that includes high-quality workshops, a mentoring programme, global networking and learning, help with growth strategies, and learning, personal, career and business development. Check out the programme and the stories of this year’s successful applicants on the Art Venture website (and grab an application form while you’re there).
In Wellington next week the Knowledge Gym presents Dr Adam Fraser, a physiologist who has worked with the likes of Tiger Woods and Olympic athletes at the famous Australian Institute of Sport. He’ll be talking on improving workplace performance.
And don’t forget the awesome Semi-Permanent 07, kicking off at Auckland’s Aotea Centre on August 11 and featuring homegrown and offshore talents like Misery, Alt and Unived Visual Artists. Tickets are still available.
Check out Idealog’s events guide, Agenda, online and in print. Anyone can add an event to Agenda—just fill out the form on our website.
Quote of the week
“This is an age of empathy. Unless you have a stable monopoly, you better understand your customer and you better tell them the truth.”
