East meets best

Welcome to Idealog Weekly, the free email newsletter for New Zealand commercial creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone rich with ideas.

East meets best

The Made in China label is pretty self-explanatory, but the new MayDE in China label needs a bit of clarification. Welcome to Idealog, the clarification experts. MayDE in China is made in China by Kiwis who design stuff here. From shoe storage doors to half-coffee, half-tea pots, Kiwi innovation is jumping in the hand-painted sack with the industrialisation nation. How very yin-yang of us. Read the story on our website and share your thoughts in the comments.

Designer over-rider

Stop trying to convince your designer that your logo needs to be bigger—just enlarge it yourself. Make My Logo Bigger Cream comes complete with a whole kit of marketers’ little helpers, including White Space Eliminator, Starburst Dust, Fluorescent Sizer and one that will have Kevin Roberts on the phone to his lawyer, the Emotionator—guaranteed to touch the very soul of your target market. Watch those units shift centimetres. (Via Macintosh Journal)

Sounds about right

If you’re facing cut backs in your business, PC Dice has just made the decision on who should go a lot easier. Sorry Mr IT guy, but diagnosing dice with one-word verdicts like ‘Virus’, ‘Reboot’, ‘Upgrade’ and ‘New PC’ have just made your job obsolete—the diagnosis they give is just as random as yours, but a whole lot quicker. Now we just need dice with ‘Give All Profits To Government’ and you can get rid of the accountant too.

Mapped

Google has moved from your homepage to Shinjuku, Japan. The Web Trend Map 2007 tracks all the movements and shakes of the world’s moving and shaking websites by placing them on Japanese cities that correspond with their web standing. YouTube is in hot spot Shibuyu—where Google was last year—Microsoft has moved to Ikebukuro, and Yahoo is in Ueno. Give your kids this lesson in web geography and suddenly the school kind won’t seem so bad.

Not in Kansas anymore

The Mercedes Benz Museum in Germany has created the strongest indoor tornado since the two-year-old. Clearly sick of cars, MB turned a smoke ventilation system into what the Guinness World Record organisation has crowned the world’s largest artificial tornado. No word on why, but wicked witches are taking cover.

Lighting the way

Magic carpets are so old mat, levitating lamps are where it’s at now. Imagine how many more rotting apple cores you can fit on your bedside table now.

Fun times

Quote of the week

“Every time we talk to a Chinese manufacturer we bring up sustainability, because it’s just a natural thing to do. And they’re interested.”

—David Hawkins in MayDE in China
