Killing two birds with methane
Welcome to Idealog Weekly, the free email newsletter for New Zealand commercial creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone rich with ideas
Killing two birds with methane
Two dollars and seven cents a litre? Soon it’ll be cheaper to pour milk in the tank. That’s probably not the greatest way to use the White Gold, mind you, given the high milk solids payouts projected by Fonterra. What happened to the idea of rear-mounted methane collectors for our bovine buddies? Couldn’t you kill two birds with one stone there, and run cars on the methane while doing your bit to reduce greenhouse emissions?
Doing it yourself
Fabel and Charlie Ash seem to be enjoying destroying what’s left of the line separating commerce and creativity. Good ideas need to be marketed, funded and managed—and who better to do that than themselves? Check out their D.I.Y. tales on our website.
Unbreakable Laptoyota
This is fun if you have a Mac ‘slaptop’ with built-in accelerometer. It’s one of the best virals ever, narrow operating platform choice notwithstanding. How do you get the truck back on the rock, though?
We like the cut of the Beemer cloth
Talking about things on four wheels, it’s hard to not like a manufacturer that builds a car designed to steer creativity and research in new directions, rather than simply producing practical vehicles.
That’s what head designer Chris Bangle and his merry band of Bavarian Beemer Boys have done with the GINA Light Visionary Model, a cloth-covered car with a modifiable steel frame.
The idea is that customers can change the shape of the car at will. Lovely concept that probably needs Kevlar-reinforced cloth for drivers venturing into the rougher parts of town. (Via Core77)
The monkey gets it?
We get it … and hope our Sales Monkey doesn’t. He’s safe still—we think—and Ben Gibb is talking to the abductors, so there’s hope still. Really, don’t hurt the monkey, just send us a pic of our mascot with a recent Herald and we’ll happily point to your website.
The paper they’re printed on
It was always on the cards that one day, someone would produce worse puns on printed matter than even we’re capable of. Enter, Ideas on Paper. It’s TOEtally impressive! Perfect for keeping morale up at your wokplace (if you work at a creche, anyway).

Billions, not just millions
The Weekly isn’t meant to be a geek-fest. Every now and then though, some very cool piece of I and T comes along that has us drooling, being creative types and all.
JusTech’n.com checks out the HP DreamColor LP2480xz, the first screen that can display over one billion colours and not just a measly 16.7 million hues. We’re talking 30-bit colour accuracy! Not to mention ten bits per colour channel! This dazzling 24-incher (diagonally measured of course) will be on image manipulators and graphic artists’ wish-lists from now on, we bet.
Wellington zen
If you’re in the capital on June 30 or July 1 don’t miss a presentation by a guy who should know a few things about presenting—Garr Reynolds. You may know him by his website, Presentation Zen, surely the world’s most popular weblog about presentating beyond the PowerPoint stage. Well beyond. If you have an idea and you want to present it to the people who matter as beautifully as you can, get yourself to one of these workshops.
Reynolds is visiting as part of the Webstock Autumn series, and will only be doing the two sessions in Wellington. More info and an interview at the Webstock site.
It may be on pretty well into the year, but Semi-Permanent will help you design the rest of it very well. New Zealand’s largest design event is for people in graphics, illustration, branding, advertising, motion graphics, fashion, film production, animation and more—so unless you drive a rubbish truck, you should get your tickets now.
Quote of the week
“We’re extremely good at maximising a small investment. It’s all about having a DIY attitude”
—Mailee Matthews of Charlie Ash on making award-winning videos for a grand or less.
