Wash down that Lovemark with a Steinie

Welcome to Idealog Weekly, the free email newsletter for New Zealand commercial creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone rich with ideas.

Wash down that Lovemark with a Steinie

Kevin Roberts of Saatchi & Saatchi fame needs no introduction from us. Idealog pinned him down to talk about what he’s doing at the moment, and correcting us on our errors. Read what Roberts was right about on our website.

And if you missed Kev at the AUTIdealog Innovation Series Plus event last month, check out this video excerpt.

Only for the very visual

Guessing the film from seeing just one letter in the movie poster? If you get more than one right, you’re cheating.

They didn’t die before they got old

Hope they get to take fun drugs with the arthritis meds and beta-blockers.

Many, many years after Otto unified Germany …

… Julius von Bismarck invents ‘fulguration’—placing a message on unsuspecting photographers’ pictures by shining a light when the flash is detected. It represents a manipulation of visual reality and so targets the very fabric of media memory, Julius says. We just think it’s cool.

Architecture, the movie

The Jasmax Film Festival is upon us again, featuring architectural movies galore and … Mon Oncle by Jacques Tati as M’sieu Hulot battling an ultra-modern house filled with gadgets. We’d go to the festival just for that one.

Catch the films between September 11 and 17, in various cinemas around the country. Full programme at the Jasmax website.

NZ Book month

September is also the NZ Book Month, with lots of events around the country for men, foodies, and children with a literary bent. Fly My Pretties will regale Te Papa with their poetry and Peta Mathias hosts a foodie feast at The Langham. Take a look at the website for the full list of events.

Stencillations

Stencils are art too, and 42Below Vodka is bringing in some of the leading proponents like Logan Hicks, HAHA and Vexta to show off their works.

Catch them in action at the 42Below Space on 20 Customs Street in Auckland at the Future Shock exhibition there. It opens at 6pm on Thursday, August 28, and is part of the Month of Street Art, a collaborative showcase with works of international and local artists. Sideroom.com and Connect The Dots are working on the exhibitions with 42Below.

Nielsen Xeros in

Congrats to Rod Drury and team for winning usability guru Jacob Nielsen’s best-designed app award!

Sagmeister speaks at Semi-Permanent

Creative genius Stefan Sagmeister is incoming at the wonderful Semi-Permanent, which kicks off today, but will he go bananas ten-thousand-fold? That is the question. Punctuation must’ve been a problem with this iconic poster for AIGA Detroit.

The Sagmeister speaks at PICNIC 07.

Quote of the week

“Even journos get it wrong occasionally. To say that 850,000 readers are wrong seems hard for me to believe. But hey, good luck with Idealog.”

—Kevin Roberts disses the Lovemark Infidel, Vincent Heeringa.
