At Idealog,
we like to do things differently. When other magazines cut down, we
grow bigger. Size is no guarantee of anything, obviously, and it’s the
stuff inside that matters. Boy, do we have an issue and a half of Idealog
for you … Amanda Cropp writes about the New Zealand souvenir industry,
Vincent Heeringa on wooden biofuels, Peter Griffin discovers a truly
disruptive invention in the power market, and Andy Kenworthy casts an
eye on what it would take to make our housing stock not just green but
of good quality.
That’s only a small part of the new issue of Idealog, in your letterbox on Saturday (if you were clever enough to subscribe) or on the newsstands from Monday. Hope you enjoy it.
Taking (web) stock
As
of writing, Webstock in Wellington is in full swing with a great list
of speakers and excellent workshops throughout the week. You kind of
wish there were two Webstocks, actually, one in Wellie and one in
Auckland. (Webstockers: make it so!)
Editor Matt and Idealist Lauren are blogging and vlogging the event, and will blog and webcast the event as it takes place. Networker Ben Kepes is blogging from the floor, too. Don’t miss their interviews with various webelebrities and read about all the new stuff at idealog.co.nz/webstock.
Playing the Foo
The
third Foo Camp in Warkworth is over, but the ideas it generated live
on. This year’s Foo Camp was fantastically good as usual, and I have
written a few blog posts about it at idealog.co.nz/blog/juha-saarinen. Do have a read.

Hi Doh!
The Simpsons in high-definition animation is one thing, but Matt Groening and Co have updated the intro too. Not to worry: it’s for the better and with the sofa getting a bigger role. (Via Kottke)
Luke intends to service Epic beer to visitors to the ale festival under the best possible conditions—brewed there so it’s fresh as can be.

Another
household name sinks in a sea of debt. Muzak has been around since the
1930s, making offensively bland music for lifts; some people hate it,
but you can’t argue that it wasn’t a great idea. ‘Muzak’, like ‘google’
even became a word.
Not so great was incurring US$1.7 billion in debt that Muzak couldn’t pay back, which is why it’s now filed for protection from its creditors. Perhaps they could make a comeback in ringtones.
International businesses of mystery
Doing
business in NZ is demanding enough, but it gets tougher when you trade
with overseas. New Zealand Trade and Enterprise or NZTE recognises this
and wants to award those who do well in international trade.
In
fact, NZTE has awarded international businesses for 40 years, but this
year the awards programme has received a makeover to reflect the
changing ways Kiwi companies wheel and deal overseas.
Win
the NZTE Supreme Award and your business will walk out with a hundred
big ones, to be used to further international growth. If you operate
successfully overseas, head over to www.nzte.govt.nz/awards to enter.
