End of the road

Well, it’s been fun, but like all good things the Idealog Guide must come to an end. We’ve taken you all the way from writing the all-important business plan to protecting your intellectual property, and from wooing investors to cashing out. But in the final instalment of our ultimate guide to entrepreneurship, Andy Kenworthy explains just what drives a true innovator and reminds us that it’s not all about the money.

Seeing is feeling

A British soldier who was blinded by a grenade is trialling new technology that allows him to “see” with his tongue. The BrainPort, which is being developed by the US military, works using a tiny video camera attached to a pair of sunglasses which convert images into electrical impulses. They’re then transmitted to sensors on his tongue (the lighter the pixels, the stronger the impulse), and by learning to interpret the signals, he can visualise the objects around him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX4S9jRJuLc

Not just a passing fad

Doing business today looks nothing like what it meant to do business 20 years ago. With the online world growing in leaps and bounds, it’s vital to keep up with the times—namely, coming to grips with the nature of e-commerce. But many are still making the mistake of failing to leverage their virtual presence and potentially overlooking key marketing opportunities. In our latest Creative Showcase supplement, five very different organisations share their success stories and lead the way forward.

Subway showcase

Waiting around is probably the biggest drawback of taking public transport. You’re lucky if there’s a shelter to shield you from the elements, let alone an actual seat—and if there is one, it’s probably graffiti-covered and germ-ridden. IKEA’s latest promotional campaign has the added bonus of making commuters’ lives a little more comfortable, though. From March 10-24, a number of high-traffic subway stations in Paris are getting a makeover with IKEA couches, chairs and lamps. Even the walls are getting the royal treatment; they’ll be showcasing a range of the company’s interiors.

Never again will you need to complain about not being able to reach that itch. This chair comes fully equipped with a wide variety of “fingernails”, controlled by a touchpad underneath the seat. Demonstrate your desired scratching intensity and position, then let the chair work its magic and relieve your back.

Light show

Sometimes we forget that half of the planet is in darkness at any given time. The City Lights Globe doesn’t, though. As it rotates, it automatically illuminates cities around the world as seen from orbit.

Chemical chopper

What do you get when you mix a rocket with a helicopter? A dragonfly—the Dragonfly DF1, to be precise. Rather than a typical fixed engine, it uses tiny hydrogen-peroxide-powered rocket motors attached to the blades. According to Gizmag, it’s been stamped as airworthy and could be on sale sometime later this year.

Quote of the week

If you are thinking of doing this for fun, try sport. It’s a lot less effort, it’s better for your health and wellbeing, and unless you go really crazy on lycra and carbon fibre, it is less likely to bankrupt you.”

— Andy Kenworthy warns that there are easier ways to turn a dollar than starting up a business
