Untouched World has won a prestigious international iF design award for its merino based cycle clothing range—no mean feat considering the collection launched less than a year ago. Since their introduction in 1953, the iF awards have been a reliable indicator of outstanding quality, and its stamp is trusted worldwide by customers today. “Having the iF logo on our garments and promotional material will be a huge bonus for the growth of our market,” says CEO Peri Drysdale. The range will be on display in the winner’s area at the Eurobike exhibition (the largest in the world) in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from September 1-4.

Slice of life
Sullen skateboarders. Red double-decker buses. Everyday street scenes in London are brought to life in Intersections, a three-minute short which won the 2010 British Flood Light film festival. There are two spots left for presenters at PechaKucha Night Christchurch next month, and if you’re keen to put your hand up, then drop a line to vanessa@pechakucha.co.nz ASAP. Originally devised in Tokyo in 2003 as an event for young designers to
network, PechaKucha has evolved into a massive celebration, with events
in hundreds of cities around the world. It draws its name from the
Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat” and relies on a very simple
presentation format to keep things moving along: 20 images in 20 seconds. The Christchurch night is on September 16, with tickets slated to go on sale from September 1.

There’s love for the advertising creatives, too, with entries now open for the Australasian Writers and Art Directors Association competition. The AWARD Awards will culminate in a night of festivity in Sydney in
March, celebrating and rewarding creativity and fresh thinking. Around 3000 entries are expected from Australia, New Zealand and Asia-Pacific, and several new categories have been created for 2011. Think along the lines of music video, applications, social media, environmental design and branded content. Add to that a new award for Creative Innovation and there’s plenty of ground to fight over.

Since 1950 we’ve been selling disposable plastic pens at a rate of 60 per second, nonstop. That’s a lot of needless waste, some of it potentially toxic. The DBA pen, however, is 98 per cent biodegradable, made from potato-based plastic and manufactured at a wind-powered facility. Watch

Aliens in our midst? Nope, that’s just a futuristic concept eco-car, more and more of which seem to be cropping up lately. Russian designer Vitaly Kononov’s design consists of two-wheeled, one-person capsule, powered by electric batteries. It also
features a number of cameras that capture images and video of its
surroundings, which are then displayed on the LED screens on either side.
