Inside the heart of a startup

An online idea that’s snapped up for squillions—it’s the modern fairytale, but tech startups don’t always have a happy ending. Rowan Simpson cut his teeth on Trade Me and Xero, and as a tech investor he’s been pitched some great ideas as well as some real dogs. While your path to success won’t necessarily closely mirror that of any other entrepreneur, there are plenty of key principles around teambuilding, raising cash, and learning from mistakes that any startup would do well to take note of. Simpson gives it to us straight, breaking down some of the mythology surrounding the whole starry-eyed business. If you can’t wait to read the whole thing, there is a shorter story published in this month’s Idealog, which is on sale now; otherwise you’ll want to read the first part of our extended online version, running in several installments over the next couple of weeks.

Two Media Design School students picked up Best Student Brief at the 2011 Bees Awards in San Francisco this week—the first international social media marketing awards for the communications industry. Ben Andrews (art director) and Craig Douglas (copywriter) won the accolade for their campaign Dreaming in a foreign language, created for client Mango Languages, which creates educational software. Another Media Design School team was also shortlisted as a finalist in the same category for their campaign Grow a little foreign man. The award carries a cash prize, a jar of honey (pictured) and a US internship for the students at the end of their course.

Dash it all

When you think about it, dashboard space in most cars is pretty useless: after all, anything you place on it simply rolls off again quick smart. An MIT creation called AIDA (Affective Intelligent Driving Agent) is intended to help drivers by turning that unused area into a 3D display that provides route, traffic and destination info, as well as controlling everything from the radio to air-conditioning.

Flying past

NZ Music Month is officially upon us, and this May, Dunedinites are invited to take a fresh look at the city’s musical past through the music of Flying Nun with someone who helped write the legend. Otago Access Radio station manager Lesley Paris has teamed up with the New Zealand Film Archive to guide viewers through an afternoon programme of classic homegrown music videos from the label where she once worked (as well as drumming for 80s bands Look Blue Go Purple and The Puddle). The Flying Nun Music Video Special will be held at 3pm on May 14 in the auditorium at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Admission is free.

Storybook slumber

What could be more comforting than sinking into a feathersoft bed, or returning to the well-thumbed pages of a favourite novel? Combine the two and picture yourself snuggling inside the pages of a gigantic, fluffy book. Photographer Yusuke Suzuki’s “book bed” concept folds up during the day to save space, while transforming into an oversized book at night.
