What could possibly lure someone away from a lucrative, prestigious, globe-trotting career in management consulting? Disillusioned by the prospect of spending years continuing to chase the bottom line, Kate Bezar decided to feed the starved creative side of her brain instead. Putting values before profit, she set out to create something that resonated with ordinary people. Dumbo feather, pass it on, is unique in the publishing world; the half-magazine, half-book features the stories of five unique individuals in their own words. As she tells Kris Herbert, her story is proof that if you follow your gut, the money will follow.

By 2015, it’s predicted more consumers will access the web via mobile than on a desktop or laptop, and we’ll have more connected devices in the world than we do human beings. These (and plenty more) are the conclusions reached by the Digital Life project. But it’s the stat about 1995 that you’ll remember. http://vimeo.com/23903009

Sometimes bloopers and outtakes are the most entertaining part of a movie (though that’s certainly not a benchmark to aspire to). While that’s not true for any of the titles on this list, these behind-the-scenes shots from some of the most famous films of all time offer a fresh perspective of life on the set in the pre-CGI times of grand backdrops and grander props.

Much like a teenager, Apple is growing “like a weed”, according to Steve Jobs. And it’s outgrown its current campus. Having recently bought 100 acres of land from Hewlett Packard, this week he unveiled some grand plans for the company’s new headquarters (Cupertino mayor Gilbert Wong has already given his blessing to the proposed “mothership”). The four-story building would house 13,000 staff and act as its own energy source, using natural gas and other clean sources. Landscaped areas would increase, surface parking decrease (moving underground for the most part) and curved glass would be the order of the day (“There’s not a single straight piece of glass in this building”).

The concept behind the Urban Earth project is simple: objectively depict our largest cities as they are, not the extremes captured in mainstream images, footage and soundbites. Each video montage is compiled from photos taken roughly every eight steps travelling across a city, and always looking straight ahead—a challenge for the photographer whose eye is naturally drawn to where the action is.

Quote of the week
I don’t believe in making an average product and spending millions marketing it so that people buy it. I’d rather spend millions making a great product and then let it sell itself because it’s a great product. - Kate Bezar on why (quality) content is king
