To the despair of independent brewers who say “Radler” is a style of beer, not a brand, DB has trademarked the beer name “Radler” for its Monteith’s range. What’s more, any lederhosen-clad pedalling German lad will tell you
that what Monteith’s is pumping out isn’t even formulated like the real
deal Radler. Shame. But it’s not entirely surprising; there’s plenty of precedent in this area and it won’t be the last case of its kind. We’ve rounded up our picks of the persnickety trademark bunch, plus predictions for the near and not-so-near future.

Increased competition has improved broadband quality,
with TelstraClear’s cable service consistently providing the best
performance, a report released by the Commerce Commission yesterday
shows. The catch: it’s only available in highly select regions. The
study also found minimum, average and maximum web browsing speeds
achievable on DSL have all also improved, with the average upper speed
on test sites increasing by
nearly 1Mbps.

New Zealand may be facing an e-waste crisis, with the imminent switch to digital TV posing a serious threat. The eDay New Zealand Trust has released a report estimating that 2.2 million televisions and 1.5 million home computers, will be dumped in the next few years—each containing toxic cathode ray tubes.
