Coal industry cries foul as Aussie Government announces clean energy future

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s announcement yesterday that from 1 July next year big polluters will pay AUD$23 (NZ$29) for every tonne of carbon emitted into the atmosphere has, not surprisingly, garnered quite the reaction. Kiwi ands Aussie scientists generally love it, but when it comes to the biggest Aussie polluter of all—the coal industry—it’s a different story altogether.

A $2.5b leap for mankind

It’s six years since we first profiled stargazin’ AUT professor Sergei Gulyaev in Idealog #2. Now he and his colleagues are part of a $2.5 billion initiative to create a network of radio telescopes able to see further into the universe than ever before. The SKA telescope, once completed, will have several thousand antennas up to 5,500 kilometres apart working together as a single telescope and allowing astronomers to see distant galaxies in more detail. Pretty clever, huh?
