Universities and crown research institutes have teamed up as part of a
fresh kiwi innovation hub, one which will create the “ingredients of success”, according to one of its founding members. The Kiwi Innovation Network (KiwiNet) would act as a
focal point for the commercialisation of homegrown
science and technology research, linking its member organisations and
the wider domestic innovation system. Members will share
resources, networks, best practice, IP and experience, while a committee will decide which
research will be funded.

When Nielsen launched its Consumer & Media Insights (CMI) research tool
back in April, publishers’ mouths started watering at the prospect of
being able to prove New Zealanders who read magazines and newspapers
actually spent more, thereby showing print was a good place for brands
to be seen. And while the first instalment of the new readership offering had a few teething problems,
it reveals “a strong connection
between high household expenditure and print media readership”.

We’re getting wi-fi (or at least more of it) in Auckland, with the council set to expand coverage, starting with the central suburbs, in partnership with Tomizone. And we can thank the Rugby World Cup for that. It’s not quite on par with Wellington’s free wi-fi however; apart from certain public service websites, we will be charged for the privilege of web browsing.

The arts industry isn’t known for being flush with cash, nor is the education sector. And resources are perennially tight at art schools. At the Royal College of Art
in London, a bit of clever collaboration has effectively turned the school into a recycling plant. A project called From Here for Here uses cast-off materials from each department to make the one product every art student needs: pencils.
