It’s 25 years since wholly Kiwi-owned brand Avanti
first launched, and if that wasn’t an auspicious enough milestone, the
company is set to acquire the bicycle division of
Pacific Brands next month, effectively doubling its turnover. Part of the Sheppard Group, which has operated successfully in the
bicycle
industry for over 30 years, Avanti says the purchase will consolidate
its position as a formidable competitor in the Australian and New
Zealand bicycle markets.

It was a dream prize for any tech startup, but
ultimately there could only be one winner of BoosterSeat2011 – and
that’s IntuitionHQ, soon to be taking a free trip to San Francisco
thanks to a group of Kiwi entrepreneurs paying it forward on the back of
their own Silicon Valley success story. Winning the competition is the “kick in the pants” the SaaS company needs to redouble its efforts to expand into the US, it says, and could lead to setting up a permanent base there.

It may be green, slimy and not all that appealing to look at,
but Kiwi company Aquaflow has been converting algae into alternative energy for
some time now – and it has just signed a major agreement with Texas-based
CRI Catalyst Company, a provider of catalyst and process technology to the
global renewable fuel market. According to Aquaflow
director Nick Gerritsen, it marks the culmination of four years of behind-the-scenes work.

Fonterra’s decision to slash its organic dairy
operations comes as a “bolt from the blue”, says advocacy organisation
Federated Farmers. The dairy cooperative is blaming consumer reluctance to pay a premium for organic products, reducing its number of suppliers and product processed – a move farmers say leaves them in the lurch and demonstrates the dangers of concentrating on a niche.

Record profitability hikes over the past year are
enabling farmers to restore their bank balances, although most are
remaining conservative in their spending. Increased dairy production coupled with a record payout of $7.50 per
kilogram of milk solids, saw gross incomes lift by 23 percent, the
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s 2011 pastoral farm analyses show.
