The merging of Yealands Estate with Ager Sectus
will form one of the largest privately owned wine companies in New
Zealand and makes sense in today’s economy, say those involved in the
deal. However, the separate brands – which own more than 1,500 hectares of vineyards combined – will retain their
individual identities and existing distribution networks.

Massey University has appointed its first ever
Innovator-in-Residence, who will work with a range of local companies to
amp up their innovation processes and boost quality and productivity. Colin Gilchrist, managing director at Set Based Solutions, is a
champion of the Learning First product development model based on
the Toyota manufacturing approach. He will be based part-time at the Albany campus running
workshops to help students and companies adapt the method, which he says
will significantly enhance Kiwi business outcomes.

Mediterranean Shipping
Company, the world’s second largest container shipping
line, has announced plans to start an Oceania
Express Service with the Port of Tauranga as its only New
Zealand port call. Port of Tauranga chief executive Mark Cairns said forecast container volumes were now expected to
increase by approximately 20-25 percent, compared to the year ended
June 2011, with plans to undertake significant capital expenditure at the terminal over the next few years.

Wellington has won an international bid to host
the 2012 Digital Earth Summit, which mayor Celia Wade-Brown says ties in
perfectly with the city’s bid to be recognised as a “creative digital
capital”. Digital Earth promotes international
cooperation through technology to assist in economic and
social sustainable development, environmental protection,
disaster mitigation, natural resource conservation and
improvement of living standards. The event is expected to
attract up to 500 delegates, many from overseas, and runs
for three days.

Nearly half of Kiwi business owners are working to
reach a lifestyle goal and believe they can maintain an appropriate
work-life balance, a new MYOB Business Monitor report suggests. The report also highlighted some marked differences in industry sectors when it comes to maintaining work-life balance, with the retail and hospitality sector demanding the most from owners and the finance and insurance sector allowing for more free time.
