GST on international business deals is hurting New
Zealand’s ability to compete on the global market, according to the
government, which is seeking feedback on options for addressing the
issue. A discussion document released today for public consultation looks at changes that could be made to the GST
system that would see non-resident businesses treated in a
similar way to New Zealand companies.

Online spending always seems to be on the up every time the IAB
releases its quarterly year-on-year ad revenue reports and figures released
for Q2 are no exception with total online advertising spend in Q2 up nearly 20 percent to $84 million. While all channels saw a surge dollar-wise, it was search and directories that
experienced the most significant growth, up 34.58 percent.

Inflation expectations are easing, if the Reserve Bank’s latest
quarterly survey of expectations is anything to go by, with respondents
tipping a 2.94 percent rate for one year out. The business managers surveyed see both hourly earnings and interest rates rising in the near future, as well as a dip in unemployment on the back of projected GDP growth.

Balance sheets at tertiary institutions are looking increasingly healthy
thanks to increasing student enrolments and government funding. Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce said universities, polytechs and wananga were continuing to record
strong financial positions, with surpluses and asset values rising year-on-year since 2008.
