A second $50 million round of research
and development grants has been announced by the government, benefiting a
total of 19 tech companies in fields from manufacturing to
biotechnology, electronics and software development. Among the big winners were Auckland-based, Canadian-owned touch-screen display pioneer Next Window; accounting software firm Xero; and animal health specialists Ancare Scientific and Argenta.

The tide of transparency has reached our shores: the government is
officially urging state agencies to open up their data troves to the
public. A Cabinet paper released yesterday calls for a culture shift within the public sector; data should effectively belong to all of us, and anybody should be able to reuse and remix information to create new applications.
