After spending 35 years building a world-beating business, Bill Buckley is “still in his overalls” and loving
every moment on the shop floor, as evidenced by his win at the Ernst and Young
New Zealand Entrepreneur of the Year awards last week. According to the founder and sole owner of BSL Buckley Systems Ltd, it’s no good doing what just anybody can do. “You have to go after the stuff
that’s too complicated for the average engineer so you can be ‘Johnny on
the spot’ when the demand hits.”

In light of a deteriorating global economy, World Trade Organization economists are
revising their 2011 trade forecast to 5.8 percent, down from an
earlier conservative estimate of 6.5 percent. In a statement, the WTO said trade had grown
more slowly than expected in recent months and the international outlook was increasingly uncertain. It is now projecting world merchandise exports to increase by 5.8 percent in volume terms,
supported by real GDP growth of 2.5 percent.

The trade balance dipped to a $641 million deficit
last month, but recorded a surplus of $1.1 billion (2.3 percent of
exports) for the year to date, according to Statistics New Zealand. In August 2011, there was a trade deficit of $641
million, or 19 percent of the value of exports. The August month is
normally in the red, and this month’s result compares with an average
deficit of 27 percent of exports for the previous five August months.

Richard Mans began teaching himself 3D animation
back in 1998. Thirteen years later, he’s about to hit the international
film festival circuit with his debut short animated film, Abiogenesis. The film will premiere at the Raindance International Film Festival
in London this week. It has also been selected for the Valladolid
International Film Festival in Spain and will have its East Asia
premiere in Hong Kong at the SIGGRAPH Conference in December.

The Green Party is
pinning its hopes on a plan to create a new economy based on the establishment
of 100,000 new green jobs, as well has unveiling its new campaign slogan,
‘For a richer New Zealand’, which ties in the party’s goals over the next three
years: clean rivers, green jobs and bringing children out of poverty.

It’s been projected that by
