Kiwi winemaker hopes to clean up dairy industry

A Kiwi winemaker looks set to clean up the dairy industry with a new invention that saves farmers money while keeping things green. Greg Morgan’s invention, Liquid Strip, removes solids from wastewater and converts them into a pellet or slug form. The invention – one of his many projects – works by passing unwanted liquids through a filter that uses patented technology to transform waste into useful solids that can be used as fuel.

Cloud computing industry keen to self-regulate

A group of key players in the local cloud computing industry wants to develop a voluntary code of practice, increasing public confidence for users wary of the great digital unknown.The initiative was born from a workshop instigated by Xero’s Rod Drury following a number of industry discussions – including at the recent NetHui Conference – identifying the need to proactively address standards and accountability around cloud computing.

Purchasing power soars as terms of trade hit 37-year high

Dairy’s golden run lifted New Zealand’s terms of trade to a 37-year high in the June quarter, and while Statistics New Zealand believes dairy prices have peaked, returns should remain high for years yet. The terms of trade, which represents our purchasing power with the rest of the world,  rose 2.3 percent to their highest level since March 1974. The latest rise was due to export prices increasing by 1.8 percent and import prices falling 0.5 percent.

Driving on sunshine: Mitsubishi and Solar City form partnerhsip

According to Solar City’s chief executive Andrew Boothe, in order to encourage the uptake of solar across the country, you need to have financing mechanisms in place to make it more accessible. And partnerships, he says, are key – which is why the company has announced a deal with Mitsubishi to offer each new i-MiEV owner a high-efficiency rooftop solar system that will provide the car with enough power to offset the energy used for charging.
