Professor Sir Paul Callaghan has written a business plan for New Zealand – and it doesn’t include winning the World Cup. “Never fear knowledge,” the Victoria University Professor and New Zealander of the Year told an audience of 1500 at the Inaugural Chancellor’s Lecture. “If you
have a business plan like the one I’m talking about you are not
interested in digging up our national parks and resources at the expense
of all we hold dear.”

Kiwi-conceived free photo sharing and geo-tagging app Snapr has
carved out a bit of name for itself after having some cash thrown its
way by New Zealand
Trade and Enterprise, being endorsed by Microsoft and used to show off the glamour shots during New Zealand Fashion Week. Now it’s captured the attention of some major Kiwi brands with a new photo sharing game called Capture
the Flag. Will it catch on with consumers?

Kiwi marketing agency Traffic has muscled its way past campaigns for the likes of Hilton Hotels to triumph in the
business-to-business category of the Summit Marketing
Effectiveness Awards in the US. Overall, the awards received more than 600 entries, but Traffic was the only local winner among them. The last
win by a New Zealand company, in fact, was in 2008 when Draft FCB won
with Cerebos Greggs.

SMEs feel they’re being overlooked when it comes to finding technology
solutions for their businesses, and that they are being penalised price-wise. A study of more than 1,000 IT decision-makers in Australia
and New Zealand by technology firm EMC found respondents believed they were often disregarded in
favour of larger enterprise businesses when it came to
better pricing, understanding and product design. More than 60 percent of small businesses said it was difficult to find
suitable solutions for their needs.
