Wellington company strikes back at AmEx

A small Wellington IP consultancy has won the first round in a legal battle with American Express after the High Court granted an interim injunction to stop the credit card giant using its trademarks. Justice Robert Dobson awarded an injunction that effectively prevents American Express from using trademarks owned in New Zealand by Zone IP as part of an online trading house AmEx intends to launch, or in its marketing or advertising until a full trial is completed.

‘Cutting edge’ health IT for RWC tourists

As the crowds converge upon Auckland today for the grand launch of the Rugby World Cup, visitors can rest easy knowing they’re well covered in the event of a medical emergency. Kiwi health technology company Medtech Global, MedicAlert Foundation International and MedicAlert New Zealand have collaborated to develop an information sharing system that allows emergency services to access the medical records of international MedicAlert members in real time.

Ovum is tipping app downloads in the Asia-Pacific market to grow by almost 200 percent this year, with Android’s dominance forecast to soar to new peaks in the near future. According to the telecom analyst, other shifts include the rise of the Windows Phone operating system, which will overtake BlackBerry for third place in both total number of downloads and revenues by 2015, and falling prices for paid apps as consumers’ expectations increase.

Broken tax laws disadvantage innovators

Patents can be big business. Nortel recently sold its patent portfolio for a record US$4.5 billion to a consortium of Apple, Microsoft and four tech players, and Google responded by acquiring Motorola’s handset business largely for its patents. But innovators get short shrift under New Zealand’s tax laws, which IP expert Paul Adams says are well overdue for an overhaul.
