New Zealand scientists and flu researchers have beaten out international competition to be awarded a five-year,
multi-million dollar contract to study influenza in an effort to better
understand the debilitating virus and how to prevent its spread. A group led by New Zealand’s Institute of Environmental Science &
Research (ESR) will study the autumn and winter ‘flu season’ amongst
the
Auckland population. The research will be
used to inform international public health and vaccination strategies
and enable better planning for epidemics and pandemics, like the swine flu.

Apple’s homepage said it all. Steve Jobs, its ailing founder,
died today at the age of 56, a day after Apple revealed the new iPhone
4S at its Cupertino headquarters in California.

After nearly 10 years at its helm, Mark Weldon will leave the NZX in the first half of 2012. He first stepped into the role of chief executive in 2002. Chairman
Andrew Harmos said the NZX had thrived under Weldon’s leadership,
turning around a loss and leaving it in good shape for his successor.

Cyclone Computers and Gen-i have been appointed as suppliers of Apple
products to the All-of-Government desktop and laptop computer
procurement panel, giving government employees
access to Apple devices. The new appointment supplements Gen-i’s
existing contract with the procurement panel for the supply of Lenovo
computers and Phillips monitors. Cyclone already supplies the government with Cyclone-branded, locally-assembled PCs.
