New Zealand software company Merlot Aero has won the business of
AirAsia with a US$1 million-plus deal that will see both AirAsia and
sister company AirAsia X using Merlot’s airline management system. The system will be rolled out in November, with full implementation expected to be completed by mid 2012.

Wellington will have a brand new Apple concept
store by Christmas thanks to Renaissance, which will be modelled after
the recently-opened Yoobee outlet at
Britomart in Auckland. According to Renaissance chief executive Richard Webb, the move
is part of a major facelift that will see almost all of its divisions
including design school Natcoll, would rebranded as Yoobee in 2012.

Companies are shooting themselves in the foot by picking leaders for the wrong reasons, a global study suggests. Research
conducted for HR
consultancy Right Management found while the best leaders excelled at
team-building, it was finance and technical experts who were being
picked for plum chief executive positions, because financial and
operational success can be quantified.

More than 600 designers turned out for the Best Awards 2011, which received a total of 812 entries – the highest in the 23-year history of the
event. A multitude of Gold, Silver and Bronze pins were handed out on Friday night, with
four winners picking up the most coveted pin of all, the Purple Pin,
representing supreme design within each category.

TelstraClear customers are to get unmetered access to all MediaWorks websites. TV3’s on-demand service and the MediaWorks family of
streaming radio stations will be zero-rated, meaning they won’t count towards a customer’s monthly data. Siobhan McKenna, MediaWorks’ director of interactive, said the company had always wanted to offer such a service. “TelstraClear makes a great partner for
this as they have been providing us with telecommunication services for
many years.”

Forget the Super City – an alliance between seven
councils in the North Island will represent 2.3 million people, or more
than half of all New Zealanders. They have reached an agreement that will enable the
councils to collaborate on a range of issues, from economic development
to transport, tourism and waste management, and while the Upper North Island Strategic Alliance (UNISA) has no
decision-making authority, it can make recommendations to the seven
constituent councils and to central government.
