A government-run app store, a single regulator for
telecommunications and broadcasting and priority for rural broadband
are among the measures proposed under the Labour Party’s IT policy. Technology and communications spokeswoman Clare Curran said the
party would
also consider expanding NZ On Screen’s film and TV archive into a broader
online content storage facility for local creative content, which could
be paid for through a small copyright levy on consumers’
internet access.

While a spate of Kiwi tech companies have been
acquired of late, Auckland-based software exporter Orion Health is
bucking the trend – it’s doing the acquiring, in this case, Microsoft’s
hospital information software (HIS) assets, and has announced intentions
to work together to co-market their products. Orion
Health chief executive Ian McCrae did not disclose the amount of the
deal but said the purchase was “transformative” for Asia Pacific
healthcare and marked a significant milestone in the company’s vision to
develop a next-generation suite of health technologies.

National tax reform is what’s needed to
effectively assist building owners with seismic strengthening, the head
of the Property Council says – not just a Canterbury-specific tax
policy. Chief executive Connal Townsend’s
comments follow the release of a report prepared for the Royal
Commission that proposes a single national policy for unreinforced
masonry building (URM) maintenance and seismic strengthening.

Electric vehicle adoption rates, slow as they may be, are growing. Partnerships like the one announced in September between New Zealand’s Solar City and Mitsubishi are a good start, but the Pure Advantage group is hedging its bets on the launch in New Zealand of the Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles (APEV). It’s modelled on the Japanese counterpart of the same name, which has been successful in uniting all facets of the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry under a collaborative umbrella.
