A host of government agencies have been tasked with working together to develop the business case for an Auckland tech hub, with a plan expected to be presented by March 2012. The Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct will bring together entrepreneurs, investors, research and development providers, and organisations specialising in bringing new products to market, focusing on IT, digital content and marine technology.

He may be busy getting his space travel venture Virgin Galactic off the ground, but when it comes to sky-bound travel, it seems space isn’t the final frontier for Sir Richard Branson. His company Virgin Atlantic has announced it is partnering with Kiwi clean energy technology company LanzaTech to develop a “world-first” low carbon aviation fuel.

New Zealand businesses currently enjoy some of the lowest insolvency rates in the world, with just 670 business failures in the September quarter compared with 850 over the same period in 2010. According to the Dun & Bradstreet Global Insolvency Index, that puts us as the second-best performing economy after Latvia among the countries D&B monitors for the quarter, with the number of insolvent businesses dropping 20 percent in the last year.

Small to medium-sized Canterbury businesses have a new avenue of support – the Vodafone Foundation and the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust have announced a joint venture to help quake-affected businesses grow. The trust will provide wage subsidy grants to SMEs, and has already paid out $2.5 million in grants and interest-free loans.

Ahead of an upcoming election debate on IT next week, InternetNZ has issued a discussion document calling for a “shared, common vision” for New Zealand’s digital future. Among the key issues raised are a broadband innovation centre, copyright law reform, more funding for local content and the publication of all Official Information Act requests and releases online.

Waikato business incubator SODA has joined the hallowed ranks of NZTE’s accredited list, setting the wheels in motion for the two organisations to work together to increase the number of high growth startups in the region. The partnership will see NZTE collaborate with SODA to enable more companies to enter its incubation programme.
