Tech sector storms through $7 billion ceiling

New Zealand’s biggest tech exporters have proved a beacon of hope, racking up more than $7 billion in revenue this year, despite a glum performance in 2010 and a gloomy worldwide economic outlook. The sector is now our second biggest exporter behind dairy, and Greg Shanahan, publisher of the annual TIN100 report, said the the growth was evidence of a maturing industry increasingly defined by larger, more capable companies.

Incubators get jurisdiction to award cold, hard R&D cash

Business incubators will now be able to award R&D grants of up to $50,000 to high-tech startups under an initiative that will see New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the Ministry of Science and Innovation aligning their support for business incubators. Accrediting incubators to provide R&D funding is one of several government moves to boost high-tech companies.
