Ex-All Black Andrew Mehrtens was matched by a Massey University robot yesterday in a man versus machine kick-off at Victoria Park. Robo
Dan was both the most consistent and the most life-like of three robots
who stepped up to the challenge, which served as a precursor to the
inaugural Schools Robotics World
Cup to be held in The Cloud from October 11-13. Associate professor Johan Potgieter said the Massey
University Albany team attempted to emulate the natural movement of a
leg in their design, and in this case it paid off, proving it’s hard to
improve on nature.

Tablet computers, external computer hard drives and e-books have been added to the CPI basket for the first time. Statistics New Zealand reviews its basket of representative goods and
services once every three years to ensure it continues to accurately
reflect household purchases. Goods
that were removed include unflued gas heaters, dictionaries, envelopes
and recordable CDs, which have all declined in popularity.

The New Zealand Film Archive has been bestowed
with the 2011 Jean Mitry Award, an international prize that singles out
individuals or organisations “distinguished for their
contribution to the reclamation and appreciation of silent cinema.” It shares the honour with the US National Film
Preservation Foundation, the archive’s partner in the collaboration to
preserve and make available American silent-era films identified in New Zealand.
