It doesn’t matter how fast technology advances –
there’s always someone at the end with a hand on the cable, according to
Mike Walsh. The author of Futuretainment
and chief executive of innovation research lab Tomorrow sees himself as
an anthropologist rather than a technologist. However, he says, they
are complementary roles – even if one dominates the discourse.

When Sir Richard Branson put out a challenge to New Zealand businesses last month, they responded in force. A total of 263, in fact, which have now been whittled down to 15 finalists. The BNZ Presents: The Virgin Business Challenge finalists
will now be asked to submit their business plans with the
top 10 being selected to pitch to a panel of New Zealand’s
leading entrepreneurs.

The government has indicated Mighty River Power or Genesis Energy are likely to be the first SOEs to be floated next year. Prime Minister John Key said it would be late 2012 by the time the necessary law changes are made for a sell-off of shares to go ahead. National has said New Zealanders will be at the “front of the queue”
for shares in SOEs and will retain ownership of at least 85-90 percent
of those companies.

It’s a good time to be a TelstraClear user this weekend – the telco is switching off its meters from 6pm on
Friday December 2 until midnight on Sunday. In other words, customers are getting all-you-can-eat broadband to
surf the web, download content and watch videos with no holds barred – although whether speeds hold up under the strain remains to be seen.

Land Information New Zealand has put out a call for consultants to scope work to
accelerate the development of spatial data infrastructure by funding
projects in Canterbury. The work involves eliciting possible projects from agencies involved
in earthquake recovery and assembling projects that will both assist in
the recovery and provide important data for freer re-use in open
formats. LINZ will evaluate the proposals and will seek government funding for the preferred ones.
