New Zealand is forging closer ties with one of the
largest research organisations in the US with the signing of a
cooperation agreement with the Texas A&M University System. Under the memorandum of understanding KiwiNet will identify client
companies that have
an interest in moving into the New Zealand and US markets respectively,
and technologies that could expand through cooperative development and
commercialisation opportunities in other regions.

Sky and TVNZ have, at last, confirmed they are indeed
launching a joint pay TV service – as predicted weeks ago over at our sister site StopPress. TVNZ will be taking 49 percent of a new pay TV platform called
Igloo – with Sky holding the majority 51 percent. This unholy
alliance allows our state broadcaster to get into pay TV without going head to head with Sky.

Christchurch City Council’s Share an Idea campaign
has been recognised internationally, prompting judges of the
Co-Creation Award to look outside Europe for the first time. Share an Idea, which involved the community sharing its ideas for the
redevelopment of the Central City following the earthquakes, was the unanimous overall winner of this year’s award from the Netherlands-based Co-Creation Association.

New Zealand’s trade deficit was smaller than expected last month as exports were buoyed by more shippings of crude oil and meat. Exports
rose 5.3 percent to $195 million, Statistics New Zealand industry and
labour statistics manager Neil Kelly said, with total exports to
Australia up $75 million.
