Igloo, the new pay TV venture of Sky and TVNZ, will be targeting mum-and-dad viewers once it launches in the first half of 2012. General manager Chaz Savage
said the product was angled at “Mum and Dad” TV watchers who might be
feeling the crunch of the slowing economy, but who still want to be able
to maintain their “happy addiction with the couch”. The idea of pay-per-view television is one that will appeal to many
viewers, but the professed mantra of “choice and flexibility” may not be
so applicable when Sky increases its monopoly position.

Delegates to the 17th conference of the parties to the UN Framework
Convention on Climate Change in Durban are now into the second half of
the second week of talks, and it is officially Business Time. As climate change minister Tim Groser told Vernon Rive, he sees a potential deal involving a
‘landing zone’ that he describes as ‘Kyoto Plus’ and says the ETS will
not be abandoned at any cost.

The Virgin Business Challenge, a competition to find New Zealand’s best start-up talent. The majority of the entrepreneurial companies have sprung from
Auckland, with nine out of the 10 based in the city, including WillliamsWarn and PowerbyProxi.

Chief scientific advisor to the Prime Minister,
Sir Peter Gluckman, has outlined the need for embedding R&D into the
heart of Auckland and put paid to the Kiwi No.8 wire myth. The decision to develop the Wynyard Quarter as a technology precinct
is seen as a huge development for Auckland in its quest to become a
knowledge centre, and Gluckman stressed the importance of the decisions
about what it will house.

new categories recognising the growing agritech sector and the
contribution that companies based outside of New Zealand
make to the local market. Fittingly for a technology competition, entrants will also now

TelstraClear’s weekend of unmetered broadband was
an abject failure according to some (InternetNZ and many other irate
customers) but a success by others. All up, 200,000 customers took part and they used two and a half times more data overall than the previous weekend. The promotion saw NZ’s second-largest ISP lift data caps on all residential plans from 6pm Friday to 12pm on Sunday.

More than a quarter of highly-educated, well-connected Kiwis working abroad are looking to return home. According to an online survey of more than 15,000 New Zealanders living
offshore carried out by expat network Kea New Zealand, 27 percent of
respondents are currently looking for jobs here for themselves
or others. One in four respondents say they plan to return to New Zealand, but
that they also plan to live somewhere else in the future. A further 22
percent say they are likely to – or definitely will – come home.

The Reserve Bank surprised nobody today, leaving the official cash rate unchanged at 2.5 percent. Reserve
Bank governor Alan Bollard said the European debt crisis had led to
“high levels of volatility” in the markets, and pointed to a softening
in international economic activity, including in
the Asia-Pacific region.
