LanzaTech, the Kiwi producer of low-carbon fuels
and chemicals from waste gases and darling of the cleantech biz, has
closed its Series C round with new investment totaling US $55.8 million
($68.8 million) led by the Malaysian Life Sciences Capital Fund. New
investors include PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd, the venture arm
of PETRONAS, the national oil company of Malaysia, and Dialog Group, a
leading Malaysian integrated specialist technical services provider to
the oil, gas and petrochemical industry. Proceeds will be used to accelerate research, development and commercialisation.

A natural substance obtained from the seeds of a
“miracle tree” could be the answer to inexpensive water purification in
the developing world, US scientists say. Research on the potential of a sustainable water-treatment process requiring only tree seeds and sand has been published in the journal Langmuir, in which adding an extract of the seed of the Moringa oleifera to
negatively charged sand proved effective in killing harmful E. coli bacteria and
removing sediment from water samples.

The health sector could see big benefits from the
introduction of UFB, which will also open up opportunities for
“innovative” methods of teaching. So says Ernie Newman, former chief of the Telecommunications Users
Association of New Zealand, in a paper for the Commerce Commission. The commission today released the second of three issues papers
relating to the uptake of UFB ahead of a public conference in February
2012. It is carrying out a study to identify factors that may
impede the uptake of high speed broadband services in New Zealand.

Businesses are planning to focus on customer
satisfaction and growth in new markets this year, according to the latest
MYOB Business Monitor. More than a third of those surveyed expected
customer retention activity to increase in 2012. The second most popular strategy for 2012 is new market growth,
according to the survey, followed by new customer acquisition.
