NZTA campaign targets drugged-out drivers

A new road safety campaign is making use of hidden camera footage to reveal the unscripted responses of ordinary New Zealanders upon finding out they are being driven around by someone high on drugs. NZTA chief executive Geoff Dangerfield says while less is known about the extent of drugged driving in New Zealand compared with drink-driving, evidence suggests drugs may be a much bigger factor in crashes than officially reported.

iPredict launches 2014 election stocks

Place your bets now: Victoria University’s online predictions market iPredict has launched stocks for the result of the 2014 general election. The site has nearly 6000 registered traders, and forecast National’s party vote last year to 0.01 percent of the actual election night result.

Best in show: CES makes history

There was no shortage of pundits this year proclaiming the downfall of CES, but the numbers paint a brighter picture. The Consumer Electronics Association said the event was the largest in the show’s 44-year history, with more than 3,100 exhibitors across the largest show floor in CES history. There were more than 153,000 attendees and 20,000 new products, with stars including Eliza Dushku, Justin Timberlake, LL Cool J, Ryan Seacrest, Will Smith and Kelly Clarkson among those who showed up.

NZIER survey points to trading slowdown

Local trading slowed in the last quarter as manufacturing and construction eased. According to NZIER’s Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion (QSBO) firms’ trading activity fell to -4 percent in the December quarter from 1 percent in the September quarter. Retailers’ strong expectations, which may have been related to the Rugby World Cup, failed to materialise.
