One Kiwi’s quest for a better search algorithm

Sick of Googling ‘apple’ only to be shown Macs or pictures of Gwyneth Paltrow’s baby? One Kiwi researcher is working on technology to help fine-tune search engines so they understand what users are actually searching for. And Daniel Crabtree’s work has caught the attention of Microsoft and Google.

epay sets sights on acquiring Ezi-Pay

epay has applied to the Commerce Commission for clearance to acquire Ezi-Pay Ltd. The buyout would include certain assets of Compass Communications and the assets or shares of EFTDATA Holdings Ltd. Both epay and Ezi-Pay are involved in payment processing markets, including for prepay phones, calling cards, gift cards and vouchers.

CAANZ shakes up Media Awards

Yesterday marked the first call for entries for the 2012 CAANZ Media Awards, led by DDB’s Chris Hancock and Chris Schofield, with a theme that tongue-and-cheekily references the Mayan doomsday prophesy. Southern Cross’ 44 percent price drop – don’t count on discounts just yet

A 44 percent price reduction in any industry may sound impressive – but unless it flows on to customers, end users couldn’t care less. Cable company Southern Cross says its network capacity has been boosted by 200 gigabits of capacity from its latest upgrade, and announced a price reduction of up to 44 percent. Nonetheless, it’s unlikely punters will benefit any time soon.

Franchising not all sunshine and roses

Many New Zealand franchisees are disappointed with their business experience due to conflict with franchisers, a Massey University study has found. The study found 25 percent of respondents said their franchising experience did not meet their expectation, and highlighted communication and conflict resolution as key areas of improvement. However, a more pressing problem was that most franchisors were in fact unaware of any issues.
