As the Ports of Auckland standoff drags on, the Productivity Commission is recommending partial privatisation of council air and sea port assets. Its 278-page draft report
released yesterday contained a raft of recommendations aimed at improving
international freight services. According to the commission, the Port of Tauranga (which is 55 percent
council-owned with the other 45 percent of shares floated to the public) is especially productive in comparison to its rivals.

Orion Health says it’s well on track to becoming a
billion-dollar software company, with Paris the latest city to enter its fold. The
opening of an office in the city of light brings the Kiwi company’s total to 14
international bases with more on the drawing board. Opening the new office, New Zealand’s ambassador to France Rosemary Banks called Orion “one of the
rare constellations visible in both the northern and southern hemispheres”.

It’s official: internet addiction is a real phenomenon. A Chinese neuro-imaging study, published in the journal PLoS ONE,
has found internet addiction disorder (IAD) is linked to structural changes
in the brain, similar to those seen in people with drug addictions and
compulsion disorders.

New Zealand’s increasing levels of obesity and
Type 2 diabetes can be linked to fast food corporations sponsoring
charities and sports events, according to Waikato District Health Board. It has issued a discussion document, Obesity, diabetes and fast food – the impact of marketing to children, that suggests corporations’ backing of sporting activity sends conflicting messages to our youngsters.

Classic vinyl record sales are booming, so it’s no
surprise the radically-designed Wand Unipivot Tonearm is getting
attention all around the world. Created by Dunedin’s Simon Brown of Design Build Listen, the Tonearm was a finalist in the 2011 Best Design Awards and got 5/5 for sound when reviewed by UK magazine HiFi World. Brown says it’s “not your grandmother’s gramophone”, representing a step change in design.

Construction is underway in Seattle on a
futuristic zero-waste apartment building, intended to host a range of
green initiatives including the recycling of waste water. The five-story Bullitt Centre is aiming to be the greenest commercial building in the world, and its designers and engineers are currently hard at work trying to persuade the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that
treating all water used onsite in a basement composting room and turning it into safe drinking water could be the answer to reducing waste.
