Educational app espouses the wonders of wildlife

With government and corporates alike onside, nonprofit Kiwipedia is out to make learning about New Zealand’s animals more fun. Ryan Ghisi has spent the last year developing the NZ Fauna app, with the assistance of DOC, Forest and Bird and Te Ara (the Ministry of Culture and Heritage), which granted access to their text and media libraries. And when it came time to promote it, the award-winning Air New Zealand marketing department stepped in to help identify relevant media channels.

Massive Auckland waterfront expansion proposed

How much do Aucklanders care about their waterfront? Enough to oppose a major expansion of Auckland’s ports, Heart of the City hopes. The lobby group has launched a publicity campaign, “Your Port, Your Call”, to get Aucklanders involved in plans which it said were buried in technical documents supporting the Auckland Draft Waterfront Plan. Chief executive Alex Swney said Ports of Auckland wanted to increase the area of its downtown container wharves by the size of 16 Eden Parks while selling Captain Cook Wharf back to the city.

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has become the first successful applicant to receive funding from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s Irrigation Acceleration Fund. The fund provides $35 million, over five years, with the aim of increasing the number of sustainable and water-efficient facilities in New Zealand. The HRBC will use the $1.67 million received from the IAF fund to commission a feasibility study for building a storage dam on the Makaroro River that would provide for up to 22,000 hectares of irrigation while improving water quality and summer flows in the Tukituki River and others.

NZ dollar charts small rise, OCR stays static

The official cash rate is staying at 2.5 percent, with Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard citing a fragile global economy in retaining the status quo. The dollar rose against the greenback ahead of the announcement, recently trading at US 81.37 cents, up from 80.98 yesterday. Bollard said international financial markets were still threatening to push up local bank funding costs, and New Zealand’s economic recovery could be constrained by delays to the Christchurch rebuild.

EcoATM turns unwanted gadgets into instant cash

Sick of your old mobile or iPod but too environmentally conscious to throw it out or too cash-poor to replace it? It’s a first world problem gaining urgency here but in the US, an ATM is revolutionising the way people recycle their unwanted consumer electronics. People looking to ditch a phone or music player need only place an unwanted device into an ecoATM, which then values and recycles the item, offering a cash payment or donation to a charity of choice in return.
