Architectus wins two awards for Student Accommodation Projects

Victoria University of Wellington - Te Puni Village
Victoria University's new Te Puni Village student accommodation project received an Excellence Award in the education and arts category at the Property Council Awards held in Auckland on Friday June 18.
Judges said the attention to urban design, earthquake damage avoidance and sustainability issues, together with the opportunity for the university to derive additional income by hiring out the dining and communal social spaces when students are not in residence, represented excellent value for the expenditure of public funds.
Three separate accommodation buildings (the Terrace, the Tower and the Edge) respond to the different aspects of the site and are linked by a level containing the communal social spaces, dining hall and administration.
The development aligns with the existing University spine and the contours which in turn have informed a 3 building composition which deliberately seeks to break down the mass of the development.
Student Housing Project - University of New South Wales
The University of New South Wales Village project received the Architecture Award for Residential Architecture Multiple Housing at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Architecture Awards on Friday night. Architectus’ student housing project was one of 17 entries in the multiple housing category.
University architecture is an opportunity to contribute something more than the obvious shelter/accommodation.
Sustainability is at the core of the design. The principles and technologies employed include cross ventilation and natural daylighting to all spaces, insulated walls and roofs, solar hot water, grey water reuse for laundries, orientation and sun-shading, vented floor slabs, and rainwater storage.

These guys just keep producing sensational work. After spending my first year of University at Grafton Hall in Auckland I feel qualified to say that students these days have it bloody good, despite all the whinging about loans.
There is an old saying that “youth is wasted on the young”. I can't help thinking that great architecture like this is wasted on students!
