Care to be transported by art?
By Design Daily Team,
Perhaps if all public transport was transformed into a work of art like this, more people would be encouraged to take a ride on the greener side. Dutch designers Million Dollar Design have given an Amsterdam subway carriage quite the artistic makeover as part of a competition by Amsterdam Public Transport Company GVB.
GVB launched a competition asking for design propositions to renovate 30-year-old subway cars. Million Dollar Design was one of 40 selected works, and after doing “a little dance of joy” for having being selected to give one of the carriages a makeover, they got straight to work.
“With our design, the common dark gray atmosphere of the underground has been transformed into a colorful underwater world. Mermaids swim along, an octopus hides under an umbrella and a turtle takes you on a journey into the unknown. The subway consists of two differently designed so-called 'bins' (compartments). One has a predominantly green color, which reminds you of the deep underwater, where strange little creatures are floating around.”
The second is purple, which the designers say, suggests that it is closer to the surface, “where small fish are flirting with the sparklings of the sunlight onto the water.” Lovely.
