Idealog—in the ideas business

Best in show

Public agencies and not-for-profits feature strongly in the Best Awards, with finalists announced today.

Work for Christchurch Art Gallery, Auckland Museum, the Supreme Court, MAF, Radio New Zealand, TVNZ, NZ Post and Tourism New Zealand appears across all categories. Good to see the public sector spending on design in recessionary times!

But there’s also a nice smattering of holy-shit Kiwi genius too. Our favs’ include
the Department Store newspaper, designed by Averill Brogan, the Yike Bike by Caleb Smith, and the Blunt umbrella by Greig Brebne.

The product category looks replete despite client belt-tightening thanks to the GFC. Pick of the bunch is the Trimax Mowing Systems ‘Trident’ by Formway. Now that’s what you call a tool. And there’s the usual suspects: Guy Pask, Alt, Shift, Methven, DNA, DesignWorks and Warren and Mahoney (but no Jasmax – eh).

  Our picks for winning entries:

  • Ironbank for the Built Environment.
  • Air New Zealand Sky Couch for Furniture
  • NZ Post Send-a-Card for Interactive
  • Iggy Pop and Orcon for Interactive
  • Dean Poole from Alt for over achiever
  • And DesignDaily for 2011!

Well done to the finalists and good luck.
