Guitar-playing Apache finds animated online following

Small Wellington-based commercial production company HoverLion, which specialises in animation, motion graphics and a touch of live action, has been creating a bit of an online buzz with a viral video that features a unique type of animation created by company co-founder Ned Wenlock.
Wenlock, a former animation director at animation company Teaspoon Films, created an Apache character and when he stumbled across a track by Danger Beach called Apache, he knew he was onto something.
“I had the character and found a track called Apache, which obviously fitted in really well. It was just short enough to make an animated video out of it. So I contacted the band and asked if I could make a video for the song and they were happy for me to do it”
Wenlock says he developed a new technique for the video which he describes as a “carousel effect”. And it’s actually pretty impressive.
“The landscape turns around on itself so it endlessly spins,” says Wenlock.Apache
Having received nearly 20,000 hits on Vimeo in three days, the video is currently sitting at 25,000 hits in five days and plans are now afoot to air it on Australian TV.
Last year HoverLion was asked by Sydney-based agency Three Drunk Monkey to create a viral video for Australian direct banking outfit UBank. It created two, both of which have received over 60,000 hits each on YouTube. Wenlock hopes the popularity HoverLion’s viral videos will broaden the company’s appeal, something he seems pretty confident about.
“We’re gradually gaining a lot of recognition in the industry,” he says.
