The All Blacks: Rugby players and car designers?
By Design Daily Team,
All Blacks sponsorship is
generally quite rife but in Rugby World Cup year, it’s notched up to another
level entirely. But if Dan Carter posing as a heat pump doesn’t make you want to buy
one, will the knowledge that the All Black’s have had a hand in designing a
limited edition Ford Fiesta get you interested?
The AB35 Fiesta has been unveiled with Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Conrad Smith reportedly all having a hand in its design. The redesign of the European-built Ford Fiesta was focused on three core areas: exteriors, interior, and performance. The blinged-out result is a car that features a carbon lip front spoiler, rear spoiler extension, side skirts,17" alloy wheels with performance tyres and a massive sound system.
Chris Masterson of Ford New Zealand says project was created to celebrate the company’s 17-year sponsorship of the All Blacks.
“The AB35 project was all about showing our commitment to the All Blacks this year. We had a huge amount of fun designing this car and it is great to be able to finally reveal it to the public,” he says.

But you be the judge. The video below documents the design process:

Don't quite get it: why do this to a Fiesta? It's a GREAT little car - but that may be a marketing problem as “little” is not the adjective you'd use for your average All Black!
The Youth market probably can't afford them and I'd imagine the AB's main supporters are more Falcon drivers - so wouldn't letting them loose on something like the XR range flagships or even the F6 make more aspirational marketing sense?

That is quite the marketing strategy indeed. I wonder if it has paid off for Ford yet. We know that All Blacks fever will reach a high during the Rugby World Cup years, and just maybe, emotionally charged fans may just want to own a car that is designed by their favourite athletes. Lets hope none of them end up on the second hand market any time soon.
