Furniture designers, meet your judges
By Design Daily Team,
As part of the inaugural 2011 Formica Formations competition, experienced and emerging designers in New Zealand are getting set to pit their design talents against 10 of the world’s best architects. And they’ll be doing so under the watchful eyes of local designer David Trubridge, and Formica’ s U.S. Vice President of Design Renée Hytry Derrington, who have both been named as two of the judges for the competition. A third judge, believed to be an internationally recognised architect, remains a bit of a mystery for now.
“There are a number of very talented and creative professionals in this country and a strong collective of promising young designers that have great careers ahead of them,” says Trubridge. “I’m certain there will be some great entries and am eager to see the finished results from the two winners.”
The Enzed competition was spurred after what Formica says was a successful collaboration in 2008 between Formica USA and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Cincinnati.
The competition is spread across two categories, one for professional architects and designers, and one for emerging architects and designers.
It requires entrants to submit design drawings only for a piece of sculptural furniture that would use Formica brand materials.

We should have more furniture design competitions like this. It would be a great chance for designers and furniture architects to show their skills to the world! No often is there a platform that allows the public to get in on the action, and to have their creations critiqued by some of the best designers in the world. It is possible for a nobody to suddenly gain fame overnight.
