Sam Haughton picks up top furniture design gong

A couple of months back we attended Fisher & Paykel’s Social Kitchen  as part of the Urbis Design Day celebrations. The Social Kitchen was a collaborative design process between chefs Natalia Schamroth and Carl Koppenhagen of the Engine Room restaurant, design agency Alt Group and furniture designer Sam Haughton and his team at IMO furniture design. And it seems Haughon’s furniture designs, namely his colourful ‘A2’ stool, made quite the impression, with the designer winning the top spot at Home  magazine’s New Zealand Design Awards, which were held last night to honour the best in new furniture designs.

The ‘A2’  powder-coated aluminium stool is the result of a brief Haughton and his team were delivered to create a light, cost-effective and colourful seat that would compliment the one-off custom ‘Fiord’ table (also a finalist in the awards) he also created with his team.

The remaining finalists in the awards were Phil Cuttance for his ‘Weld’ vases, David Moreland for his ‘Band’ Shelves, Nathan Goldsworthy for his ‘Adjutant’ Table, Marl Seeney for his ‘Ruin’ Side Table, Jamie McLellan for his ‘Odin’ Chair, David Trubridge for his ‘Sola’ Light, and Alex Webster for his ‘Isla’ Chair and Ottoman.

This year’s awards were judged by the director of Auckland's Objectspace Gallery, by Philip Clarke.

Sam your A2 stool is really A1! - well done.

My house has a lot of solid oak furniture, and I was thinking of spicing it up with other materials like plastic and such, and this post definitely gave me a head start and some inspiration. The only regretful thing is that these pieces are not available commercially.
