Submit über-question, WIN pass to We Can Create
By Design Daily Team,
We don't know about you, but here at Design Daily we're getting pretty psyched about delving into the creative wisdom of the speakers at upcoming art, design and creative technologies mega event We Can Create. But if you're yet to buy a ticket and fancy your chances at winning one, here's your opportune moment.
How to win: We have two passes to giveaway (one VIP and one GA) and to win, all you have to do is tell us which speaker you'd most like to meet from this year's line-up, and what question you'd ask them.
Obviously the craftiest of answers will nab the VIP pass (valid at $495), and in case you didn't know, here's what that will get you:
- VIP front row seating at the event
- VIP goodie bag
- Opportunities to meet the speakers with:
- An invitation to the VIP launch of We Can Create
- Dedicated VIP lounge at the We Can Create After Party
In the meantime, you can check out what New York-based illustrator, designer and art director Sara Blake had to say when we asked her our own questions, including what she most wants to do when she touches down in New Zealand (clue: It 's related to something we're famous for). Read the interview HERE.

speaker I'd like to meet is Frank Kozik. I'd like to ask him this… You've been involved in the music scene and seen lots of bands, i'm guessing - what's your favourite musical memory?
Bita
My question is for Eike Koenig;
‘If Ergonomics is the science of refining
the design of products to optimise them
for human use, what is the science of refining the design of humans to
optimise product use?'
Rebecca
I'd love to meet Sara Blake. I'd ask her:
“Your work has such an acute level of detail, yet it never looks overdone: How do you know when to stop working on a piece?”
Princess Leelee
I would ask Chris Graham how to protect ones rights when co-writing a screenplay. I spent 7 months writing every day with a bully who withheld the finished product and used his money to threaten lawyers and ended up with the rights, only to never do anything with the movie. Sigh.
Kyle
Frank Kozik. I'd ask him, if he was to create the Rhythm and Vines poster artwork, what angle would he take?
Olivia Young
I would like to meet Sara Blake.
I understand you work as both a commercial artist and as a solo artist. Describe how your inspirations have, and continue to drive and motivate your two practices. And also, whether these inspirations overlap and co-exist with the two practices.
Thank you.
Toby
My question to Morag Myerscough would be, based on your method of approaching jobs without any preconceptions as to not be constrained by set formulas from the outset, what techniques do you implement to overcome your clients preconceptions and pre-conceived ideas?
David Thoresen
Sarah Blake.
What is your favourite onomatopoeia and how would you go about illustrating it?
Augusta Grayson
My question would be for Frank Kozik - The Music Industry is on that has been constantly accused of failing to keep up with new technology and behaviour trends. Record companies in particular seem to be failing to find success in monetising music artists and groups. Do you think that there are unique ways that art and design can add innovation and value to music in a way that people would be more prepared to pay for?
Leah
A question for all the speakers..
If you were a crayon, what colour would you be and why?
Zoe Sizemore
I would love to meet Sarah Blake
I would ask her if there is one particular subject she has always loved to draw and how has the style of this subject evolved over the years?
Christina Whitley
Kris Sowersby my question would be: What are the key essential elements when creating a type face.
Mary Faber
Kris, if you had to be personified in a typeface, would you a) choose an existing typeface not designed by you, b) choose a typeface you have already designed, c) start sketching OR d) tell me to stop giving options so you have creative freedom over your answer..?
Tim Gruar
I'd lid to as Sarah Blake what her favourite Musical or Theatre Production is, and how she would go about working with a producer and set designer to create the poster, publicity art and on-stage graphics required for an overall package. I love the 'watercolour' feel of her work, it's fuidity and wispy sense - so i'm wondering how that would work with lights and actors.
Che Bailey
To Kris Sowersby, would you consider yourself a likeable type?
Clayton Elliot
Engin Celikbas, when you visit your website it goes to a lot of random sites. Is this intentional, if so, how the truck do we see your work so I can make up a good question to win this comp??? Went to http://www.kesselskramer.com/. I did enjoy the hunt for a minute or two :) Clayton.
Klay Elliott (aka above)
Like to meet Tomas Roope from The Rumpus Room.
Question is: If you were going to be known for contributing something to the design world, what would you like that legacy to be and how much would you want to be paid for it???
Klay :)
Fraser Macedo
My question would be for Karin Fong - How do designers get into film title design - is there a big enough industry in New Zealand to start a company like that here? Thanks, Fraser.
Chris Mitchell
My question is for Kris Sowersby -
Early in your career you would submit unsolicited work to organisations, approaching them with a stronger solution than they were currently employing. You were sometimes turned down, though it appears you have worked for some of the people you approached later on.
How important were these approaches early on in your career, and what was the most beneficial method – both for your personal development and work being commissioned?
Ricky Sam
Rumpus Room: Do you have any examples of really bad clients? How did you deal with them?
Keri Clarke
My question is for Eike Koenig:
If you could make all of one kind of thing go away, what would it be?
Pippa Ensor
Question for Kris Sowersby:
Which is worse - a bad type or a bad typo?
tom
my question is, is Sara Blake single?
che bailey
Who won?
Deirdre Robert
