K’Road unveils its artful shelter

Bus shelters aren’t ordinarily much to look at, but the new additions to K’ Road, unveiled earlier this week at a dawn ceremony, offer up a bit of an artistic twist. The original 1970s shelters have been replaced by an open-style structure designed by Opus Architecture that optimises views from the overbridge. The design includes new safety screens, a canopy along the length of the bridge, new seating areas and improved lighting. 

Tongan artist Filipe Tohi was commissioned by the K 'Road Business Association to design decals (removable transfers) for the light poles on the overbridge. The removable nature of the decals means other artists will be able to showcase their work in the future.

The project came in at an overall cost of $2.1 million with Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development contributing $300,000 towards the cost. Auckland Transport said the replacement project was more cost-effective than upgrading the existing shelters because of ongoing maintenance costs. The previous shelters had outlived their shelf live by more than 15 years.

"K 'Road is one of Auckland's most famous roads and it's important that it looks its best, particularly with RWC 2011 less than three weeks away,” commented Auckland Transport chief executive David Warburton.

Well done everyone.

I disagree with Peter. Compared to what it used to look like, this is awesome sauce. I cycle pass this on a daily basis and it's one of the highlights of my commute (the other being Wynyard Quarter, of course).

It makes great use of the space — letting more natural light in, providing shelter and trying to cover up the eyesore that is the motorway spaghetti.

Essentially it's a bus stop and its character will be defined by people who utilise the space, not the structure itself — just like suburbs or streets.

Who gives a damn. It's a bus stop and looks way better that the old crappy one that looked liked it was painted by a child.

Well i guess it looks like a bus stop….from the 80's. The bus shelter is not so much a shelter than a disparate array of parts found in the leftovers of other public infrastructure projects.

It seems like a lost opportunity to create an interesting space which connected the 2 sides of Krd.

Where to start….

The roofs are not continuous so you are not protected from the weather (at lest the old roof provided continuity and shelter).

The structural steel could hold up an aircraft carrier, and yet it is only holding up corrugated roofing.

The screens to the motorway are covered by punch hole sheet metal which frustrates your view.

The footpath is constructed with asphalt and pebble. (while on one side of Krd we have tiles, and the other side is concrete).

The seats are too high (people look hilarious sitting on them when their feet don't touch the ground).

The bus shelters are placed at an awkward distance from the back wall, creating what has been termed 'rape alley'

Maybe riding past them on a bike at night is ok…..but walking past them every day makes me want to buy a gas axe.

Opus has never been know for design innovation, Why would they be asked to contribute to significant public project when a 2nd year design student could have done a way better job at less cost.

Notice how the photo only shows the kinda good looking shelter. Not the other 40-50 meters crappy grey steel and glass. And the old mural along the bridge has been replaced with horrible grey steel panels. Just what Auckland needs more f#*@ing grey.
