A Best Awards chat with Black Pin winner Fraser Gardyne
Published
Fraser Gardyne reckons he won his Black Pin for Outstanding Achievement because when it comes to the design industry in New Zealand, he simply “won’t go away”. That and he’s an “old fart”.
In our latest video interview from the Best Awards, the principal of graphic design company gardyneHOLT explains why the gratification he felt in his earlier days of design — days when he used to design books — is completely different to the feeling you get these days when you’re designing brands and working with different media like the web. He also tells us why he thinks the Kiwi design industry is "absolutely stunning", in spite of a difficult last few years.

Go Fraser, I think from our years at Wellington College we have an outstanding record of creative thinkers and dooers amongst our alumni.
We were educated in chaotic circumstances with the college being re built as well as total anarchy towards uniforms and hair length issues. It is safe to say we all hated school authority, so I think it led to many of us trying independent futures and some of us succeeding.
Chris Burt = Sound track designer and audio post facility owner extraordinaire.
Alan Jansson = Creator of international hit 'How Bizarre'
Andy Hagen and Morton Wilson from Schtung
Myself - Malcolm Cromie = Sound Recordist & Mixer
I'm sure there are many more…

The additives of the time and since will have contributed I suspect!

His speech on the night was inspiring, even Mr Len Brown was so impressed he quoted him.
Nice one Frazer, a well deserved Black Pin.
