Bright idea sparks crafty eco bulb innovation
By Deirdre Robert,
Apart from their longer lease on life, eco bulbs don’t offer up much by way of design. Well, not until designer Tien-Ho Hsu offered up this nifty paper eco bulb. While regular energy efficient light bulbs to take up space in landfills, Hsu’s innovation, dubbed the ‘Eco Light’, is made from paper meaning the bulb can be recycled once it’s done its dash. The bulb was a winner at this year's Liteon Awards, which invited designers from around the world to improve technological products by giving them an eco edge.

Come on, we need more details on it than that!! How does it work? I mean, I'm aware how a traditional incandescent bulb works - a very thin filament burns inside a vacuum so it does not react with oxygen. Edison spent years looking at carbon based filaments, searching through countless species of bamboo etc to find the perfect filament. Even so, the average incandescent is 95% heat, and only 5% light.
So - just how does this work - is there a paper based filament and is it in a vacuum ie is there a glass sphere ? Or some other magic? And has the last 30 years of CFL technology just gone down the tubes? Or is this maybe not that really Eco-friendly after all? Answers please!
