Win! A decade in pictures!
By Idealog,
From Valerie Adams to Kylee Guy, the faces featured in New Zealand New Millennium are instantly recognisable. It's a comprehensive portrait of our nation in images from 2000–2010 – in news, politics, natural disasters, sports, arts/culture, celebrity, lifestyle, and a fair share that are simply quirky, poignant or striking.
More than 300 photographs, each accompanied by extended captions, paint an exhaustive picture of modern New Zealand. A keeper for the coffee table.
We have three copies worth $50 each to give away – just tell us what the defining moment of the decade was for you. Competition closes November 30.

Utterly unoriginal I know, and it didn't even happen in NZ - but mine would be Sept the 12th 2001, since that's when we all saw Sept the 11th happening in New York. I think everybody remembers where they were that day, in a similar way to how I've heard my parents generation talk about JFK's assassination, or the moon landings. It certainly cast its shadow over the rest of the decade, affecting NZ in a myriad of ways.

Sadly I must agree with Saul. Sept 11, 2001 in New York was the defining moment. I had just 2 days earlier returned to New Zealand from France and a wonderful family holiday. Air travel would never be the same again and the ramifications of continuing wars and conflict across the Middle East are with us all today. Unfortunately no politicians/world leaders came out of the situation smelling of roses. It was and is, bad through and through. Mans inhumanity to man. Having said that, the New York fire fighters were heroic.

Leaving Auckland in 2003 and moving to Queenstown. This made me realise there is certainly life south of the Bombay Hills, and helped me rediscover and love New Zealand in a whole new way. Every tourist who comes to Queenstown and is awed by the place makes me smile and appreciate the little things like the incredible view out my windows!
