Cardboard cans. Whatever next?
By Siobhan Leathley,
Trust the Germans to come up with eco-friendly ways to enjoy a cold one.
Keienburg GmbH has reinvented the wheel with a can that offers a cheaper, greener alternative to aluminum - cardboard.
The new cardboard cans are suitable for most canned liquids, including beer, juice and coffee.
Current lines will only need small modifications to use the new material.
Other benefits to manufacturers include reduced storage and transportation costs - and consumers win too, as their fizzy stays colder for longer in a cardboard can.

Hardly a new idea. US orange juice used to come in cardboard cans in the 70s

This looks very much like mindless repetition of a press release.
What exactly makes this “eco-friendly”?
Presumably the cardboard has a waterproof coating so is it recyclable or bio-degradable? Combining aluminium with cardboard makes recycling much more complex.
It may stay colder longer but the same insulating property means it will lake longer, and more energy, to cool down.
How will transport and storage costs be reduced? The volume and weight must be much the same.
