Mogeo builds on outdoorsy apps suite

App development company Mogeo mogeo.co.nz is reinforcing its reputation as the partner of choice for recreation and travel-focused applications, releasing a new offering for boaties and building a network of companies and a website around information that makes it easier to travel around the country.

The firm’s apps now number about 10, with the latest being Marine Mate. It offers boating regulations, speed limits and mooring zones, tide times, boat ramp locations, local notices and information on safe boating practices.

Managing director Adam Hutchinson says the company’s specialty in outdoorsy apps comes from he and his fellow developers’ interest in water sports and recreation. “Most of my spare time I’m in the outdoors and I do a lot of fishing and diving. When you start to think about how technology could combine with that, you identify problems and opportunities to do things better.”

The iOS and Android app was dreamed up by Waikato Regional Council and Mogeo developed it to include data from a range of councils. Gathering the information was a lengthy process, Hutchinson says, because many people in different councils held specific information, and councils had this information in various forms from printed brochures and photos to in-depth geospatial data.

Mogeo is also making the most of information packaged and gathered for its Campermate app, released last year. Hutchinson doorknocked councils to get information for the app, which includes the locations of bins, toilets, dump stations, petrol stations, campsites, wifi zones, hostels, supermarkets and other useful sites for travellers.

In the last year the app’s been developed to allow users to submit their own site locations. The app has had 20,300 downloads and now has a companion website, camping.co.nz. Four organisations — Jucy, Wicked Campers, YHA and hostel/backpackers association BBH — are tapping into Campermate information via the crowdsourcing project GeoZone, using the data in their own apps and sites.

Mogeo has also tailored versions of Campermate for these organisations.

The company has also produced two prototype applications for the Ministry of Primary Industries, one for pest identification and another focused on agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines. Last year it produced an augmented reality furniture buying app, Furniview
